Performance/Settings
Many features in the Game Settings can affect game performance.

The most important options to change are the "Video" settings:
Under "Resolution":
Changing screen resolution should only be done if you are desperate to increase FPS. "Multisampling" should be at its lowest setting (1x) for maximum performance. "Vertical Sync" will limit your FPS in order to reduce screen tearing, usually caused by your graphics card. Checking or unchecking this option is completely depending on your current performance. The same thing is dealt with for "Reduce Input Lag."
Under "Effects":
Basically all levels here should be at "Low" if you want maximum performance. The only settings that may need constant changing are "Particle Density" and "View Distance." Having these set as "Low" will improve performance. Sometimes having "Particle Density" set "Low" is useful (e.g. gaining healing stacks in the portals during the Valithria fight), but having it set at the middle or "High" will aid you in seeing flames and other things easier. Some fights may require having the "View Distance" set somewhat higher than the "Low" setting (e.g. being able to see flying pyrite during the Flame Leviathon encounter). The bottom four boxes should be unchecked for maximum performance.

Although these settings won't affect your performance as much as the video settings, the "Sound & Voice" options can make a difference:
Under "Sound":
Simply lower or turn off sound and sound levels you do not need or want to have on. "Sound Quality" is probably the biggest change that you can make under these options.
Under "Voice":
You probably don't need this turned on at all.

For "Interface" settings:
Under "Names" and "Combat Text":
Only have the boxes checked that you need to have on.
