Pally DPS Guide

Much has changed with 4.0 changes, including a new resource system for Paladins! Holy power now builds up from using Crusader Strike, up to a maximum of 3. We then use a 'finishing' move, such as Templars Verdict for damage, or Word of Glory for a heal.

Stats

Strength
Gives the biggest dps gain, even more than hit and expertise, though it is still good to reach the cap/dodge cap for those two respective stats to have smooth incoming Holy Power generation!

Haste
Due to the large amount of rating required to get CS to a 3 second cooldown, it is no longer optimal to stack this. It is either reforged away into Crit or Mastery.

Crit
Critical attacks deal 200% normal damage. Almost equal with mastery for dps increase.

Mastery
CS, TV, and DivS deal x% additional damage as holy damage. Amazing stat when combined with inquisition.

Glyphs

Prime
Glyph of Templar's Verdict - Increases the damage of Templar's Verdict by 15%.
Glyph of Exorcism - Exorcism causes an additional 20% of its damage over 6 sec.
Glyph of Seal of Truth - Expertise increased by 10 with Seal of Truth active. If you are 26 expertise already without this, reforge your gear out of expertise and use this glyph anyway. It will be a DPS increase.

Major
(Most major glyphs for us seem to be mana savers)
Glyph of Hammer of Wrath - Reduces mana cost of Hammer of Wrath by 100%.
Glyph of Ascetic Crusader - Reduces mana cost of Crusader Strike by 30%.
Glyph of Divine Protection - Removes the physical damage reduction of your divine protection but increases the magical damage reduction by 20%.

Minor
Choose whatever you want, its all mana cost reduction ones anyway. As DPS Might and Truth will be most useful.

Gems, Enchants, Consumables

Gems

The main gem Focus of the Ret Pally is Strength. Due to DPS meta gems requiring 3 red gems, you will almost always socket Bold Rubies unless the socket bonus has high enough strength (usually 20+)


Enchants

  • Weapon - Avalanche - Permanently enchant a weapon to often deal 463 to 537 Nature damage to an enemy damaged by your spells or struck by your melee attacks.
  • Head - Arcanum of Torment - Adds 50 attack power and 20 critical strike rating
  • Shoulders - Greater Inscription of the Axe - Adds 40 attack power and 15 critical strike rating
  • Back - Greater Speed - Increases haste rating by 23
  • Chest -Powerful Stats - Increases all stats by 10
  • Gloves - Crusher - Increases attack power by 44
  • Wrists - Greater Assault - Increases attack power by 50
  • Legs - Icescale Leg Armor - Increases attack power by 75 and critical strike rating by 22
  • Feet - Icewalker or Assault - Increases critical strike and hit rating by 12/attack power by 24.
  • Ring - Assault - Increases attack power by 40 (Must be an enchanter.)

Consumables


Reforging
At the moment, our mechanics would have us reforge for mastery, and if that is already present on the piece of gear, usually leave it alone. Remember you can reforge off extra hit rating if you are above the 8% cap for melee! Use this to your advantage and put it to either mastery, or crit.

Templar’s Verdict (3 HP) > Hammer of Wrath > Crusader Strike > Exorcism (art of war) > Judgement > Holy Wrath > Consecrate (use with caution, can get you stuck with next to no mana)
